The ceremony at the university’s main campus saw 143 students receive Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, 1,813 earn master’s degrees, and 11,454 graduate with bachelor’s degrees. Additionally, 243 postgraduate diplomas were awarded. Women made up 53% of the graduates, with an impressive 44% of PhD recipients being female, reflecting Makerere’s strides in promoting gender equality in higher education.

Abdul Latif Umar Bagoole, who earned a Bachelor of Leisure and Hospitality Management with a CGPA of 4.97, was recognized as the top graduate in the humanities.
What did Professor Barnabas Nawangwe say at the Makerere 75th Graduation?
In his speech, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, commended the graduates for their hard work and resilience. He also acknowledged the university’s accomplishments over the past year, including groundbreaking research and impactful initiatives from various colleges.
Highlighting the College of Education and External Studies, Prof Nawangwe applauded the launch of a Competence-Based Curriculum Research project, supported by Education Minister Janet Museveni, and new programs in early childhood education. The keynote address was delivered by Prof Puleng LenkaBula, Vice Chancellor of the University of South Africa, who underscored the importance of intellectual emancipation. She emphasized Africa’s critical role in global knowledge production and challenged the graduates to position themselves as leaders in advancing the continent’s socio-economic transformation.

The 75th Graduation Ceremony of Makerere University commenced today, January 13, 2025, at the university’s Freedom Square. The ceremony spans five days, concluding on Friday, January 17, 2025. On this inaugural day, graduates from the College of Computing and Information Sciences (CoCIS), College of Education and External Studies (CEES), College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Bio-security (CoVAB), and the School of Law (SoL) received their degrees and diplomas.
The Makerere 75th Graduation will continue over the next four days, with each day dedicated to different colleges and schools within the university.
- Tuesday, January 14, 2025: College of Health Sciences (CHS), College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS), and College of Business and Management Sciences (CoBAMS).
- Wednesday, January 15, 2025: Makerere University Business School (MUBS) and its various faculties.
- Thursday, January 16, 2025: Continuation of MUBS graduations.
- Friday, January 17, 2025: College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES), College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT), and College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS).
In total, 13,658 students are set to graduate during this period, with today’s ceremony marking the beginning of this significant academic milestone.
