The 2024 Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) results were released today, January 23, 2025, at noon. The results were announced by the UNEB Executive Secretary, Dan N. Odongo, and the First Lady, Janet Museveni, who also serves as the Minister of Education and Sports, in a press briefing held at the State House in Nakasero.
How many candidates were registered for the 2024 PLE Exams
According to the UNEB Executive Director, 797,444 candidates from 14,883 centers registered for the 2024 PLE, marking a 6.4% increase (48,190 more candidates) compared to the 749,254 candidates in 2023. Of the total candidates here are the stats according to the 2024 PLE Results:
- 524,025 (65.7%) were Universal Primary Education (UPE) beneficiaries from 11,451 centers.
- 273,419 (34.3%) were Non-UPE candidates from 3,432 centers.

More girls were registered for the 2024 PLE Exams
In 2024, 418,750 girls (52.5%) registered compared to 378,709 boys (47.5%), maintaining the trend of more girls completing primary education. In 2023, girls comprised 52.3% and boys 47.7% of the total candidates.
How many candidates with Special Needs were registered for the 2024 PLE
The Board registered 3,328 learners with special needs in 2024, a 25.5% increase from 2,652 candidates in 2023. The breakdown by gender is as follows:
- 47.9% female candidates
- 52.1% male candidates
The 2024 results highlight an improvement among special needs learners, particularly deaf candidates, where the proportion of ungraded candidates decreased from 44% in 2023 to 23% in 2024.
Prison Inmates Participation
A total of 108 inmates sat for the PLE from Luzira Upper Prison and Mbarara Main Prison. Luzira registered 71 candidates, up from 69 in 2023, with notable achievements:
- 4 candidates passed in Division 1
- 36 obtained Division 2
- 13 obtained Division 3

Candidates performed better in SST, Science, and Mathematics, while English recorded a drop in performance compared to 2023. Distinction scores declined across all subjects due to challenges in higher-order thinking questions.
Overall Performance
A higher proportion of candidates passed in Division 2 and above compared to 2023. 91.8% of candidates achieved passing grades, compared to 88.0% in 2023, although fewer candidates scored in Division 1.
Division U (Ungraded) candidates are those who failed to meet the minimum performance level for Division 4 and are ineligible for admission to Senior One.

Although male candidates performed better proportionally, a higher number of female candidates were registered and scored in Division 2 and lower divisions.
Emerging Concerns
A worrying trend has been observed in some schools, where perfectly normal pupils are being registered under special needs categories such as ‘Others’ for health conditions like asthma and epilepsy. UNEB has pledged to investigate and address this issue.

How do I check my PLE results for 2024?
After the official release, candidates, parents, and teachers can access results in the following ways:
- SMS Service: By typing PLE, leaving a space, entering the full index number, and sending it to 6600. For instance, “PLE 00123/356” sent to 6600 will retrieve results.
- School Portals: Schools will be able to download results from UNEB’s online portals.
- Hard Copies: Printed results will be distributed to District, City, and Municipal Inspectors of Schools.
