According to a recent survey conducted by Sport’s website ‘ The Athletic ‘, 58 per cent of Manchester United fans think Mason Greenwood should not play for the Old Trafford giants again. This is in contrast with the 13 percent who are not yet sure whether the 21-year old should play again for Manchester United. They are joined by 29 percent of the fans who are okay with the idea of the versatile winger and forward coming back to the first team.
It should be remembered that Greenwood’s saga began way back in January 2022. By then he faced charges of attempted rape , controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. However, these charges were dropped in February 2023.
The current situation about Mason Greenwood is whether or not he should return to the first team of the 20-time Premier League Champions. It’s rumoured that the club may have a plan to bring him back but the fans have mixed reactions about this.
Fans’ take on Mason Greenwood Coming back
Though 58 per cent of the fans who answered The Athletic’s say Greenwood should not play for United again ,60 per cent of another section of fans pledged in their response that they would still support the club even if Greenwood come back.
Surprisingly, or not surprisingly at all , a number of fans are not happy with how the Red part of Manchester has communicated the process of handling Greenwood’s matter . This is represented by a figure of 77.6 per cent.
Furthermore, The Athletic goes ahead to allow readers ( Manchester United fans ) who responded to the survey to have more detailed comments about the situation of Greenwood’s return.
What fans said :
Anonymous 1: There appears to be a growing problem within football concerning instances of sexual misconduct and violence. Greenwood serves as an illustration of this issue, although he’s not the sole example. I can only hope that this becomes a moment of self-reckoning for all clubs, prompting efforts to educate young players. This way, we can work toward safeguarding individuals in the future.
Anonymous 2: As a female season ticket holder, I find the prospect of Mason Greenwood’s return to the team deeply troubling. The fact that charges were dropped does not equate to proof of innocence. As indicated by the police, the charges were withdrawn due to insufficient likelihood of conviction.
The images we’ve seen and the audio tape we’ve heard are indelible. Allowing his comeback could send a message to women that their voices don’t matter.
Mason Greenwood can never serve as a role model for young fans and is unsuitable to wear the team’s jersey. I will never offer applause, nor celebrate any goals he scores, and I will continue to feel profound disappointment in being a supporter of United should he ever step back onto the Old Trafford field.
Some positivity
Jonathan: I’m grappling with a dilemma regarding the optimal course of action. Nonetheless, I am of the opinion that Mason Greenwood should be afforded an opportunity to present his perspective and demonstrate personal growth. Completely ostracizing him doesn’t facilitate personal transformation. Perhaps he merits a chance at redemption.
Anonymous: The charges were dismissed due to the emergence of new (pertinent) evidence. Opting to remove him to avert negative public relations outcomes would be the straightforward choice. Yet, deeming him culpable when he hasn’t been proven guilty contradicts the fundamental principle of presumed innocence until proven guilty. My primary concern isn’t Greenwood’s return to United as a player, but rather the hope that he and his family can progress and reconstruct their lives.
