Amahoro Stadium is a government-owned stadium in Rwanda, located in the capital city, Kigali. It is the largest stadium in the country, with a seating capacity of 45,508. The stadium hosts various events, including football matches, concerts, and other public gatherings. It primarily serves as the home ground for the Rwanda national football team.
Installation Date of VAR Technology at Amahoro National Stadium
The Amahoro National Stadium in Kigali has recently undergone significant technological upgrades, including the installation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) equipment. The installation was completed on 26th January 2025, with testing scheduled for February 2025.

The implementation of VAR technology is set to enhance the officiating standards in the Rwanda Premier League matches hosted at the stadium. This development aligns with the broader renovation efforts aimed at modernizing the Amahoro National Stadium, which began in August 2022. The renovation project aims to double the stadium’s capacity from 25,000 to 45,508 seats and is expected to be completed by 2024.
In addition to VAR, the stadium has been equipped with a spider camera system, further enhancing the quality of sports broadcasting and analysis.
The integration of these advanced technologies underscores Rwanda’s commitment to elevating its sports infrastructure to international standards.
How Much Did It Cost To Build Amahoro National Studium?
The Amahoro Stadium was first renovated between 2011 and 2016. Later, from 2022 to 2024, it underwent further renovations, increasing its seating capacity to 45,508. The playing surface features hybrid grass.
The main contractor for the renovation was the China Civil Engineering Construction Company. The Rwanda National Football Team, which has been using the stadium since 1986, remains its primary tenant. The renovation project cost $165 million to complete.
Testing Schedule for VAR Technology at Amahoro Stadium In Rwanda
It has been reported that the testing of VAR technology is scheduled for February 2025 at Amahoro Stadium. The tests aim to confirm the system’s efficiency ahead of the CHAN and AFCON games in 2025, as well as the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
