Transport economist Benon Kajuna has been appointed as the new Managing Director of the Uganda Railways Corporation (URC), replacing David Musoke Bulega, who has been serving in an acting capacity for the past two years.
How did Benon Kajuna become Managing Director of Uganda Railways Corporation?
Kajuna was selected by the URC Board of Directors after undergoing a series of interviews conducted last year. He officially assumed office on Friday after taking the oath of office.
Before this appointment, Kajuna served as the Director of Transport at the Ministry of Works and Transport. He holds a Master of Business Administration from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (ESAMI) and a Master’s in Economic Policy Management from Makerere University. Additionally, he is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.
With over 30 years of experience in transport planning and management at national, regional, and international levels, Kajuna has played a key role in shaping Uganda’s transport policies and infrastructure projects. His expertise spans strategic planning, project management, railway development, and operations.
Who is Benon Kajuna?
Benon Kajuna is a seasoned transport economist with a distinguished career in Uganda’s transport sector. He has been actively involved in major transport policy initiatives and infrastructure development projects aimed at improving efficiency and sustainability.
As Director of Transport at the Ministry of Works and Transport, Kajuna spearheaded key initiatives to modernize Uganda’s transport systems. He played a vital role in the establishment of the Railway Capacity Building Center in Nalukolongo, a project designed to improve railway infrastructure and train skilled professionals in the sector.
What did Benon Kajuna do before?
Before becoming a part of railway development, Kajuna was an advocate for road safety in Uganda, working closely with stakeholders to promote better traffic regulations and policies. He has been vocal about the need for improved speed management and road safety laws to reduce accidents and fatalities on Uganda’s roads.
His academic background and professional affiliations underscore his commitment to excellence in transport management. Holding two master’s degrees and being a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, he brings a wealth of expertise to his new role.
