What are the new dates for CHAN 2024?
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially postponed the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, originally scheduled to take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, to August 2025.
The decision was announced on January 14, 2025, following a comprehensive review of the preparations in the host countries. According to CAF, significant progress has been made in the construction and upgrading of stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other facilities needed for the tournament. However, the CAF Technical and Infrastructure experts, some of whom have been stationed in the host nations, recommended additional time to ensure that all infrastructure meets the high standards required for a successful CHAN event.
Why has CAF postponed the dates of CHAN 2024?
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed gratitude to the presidents of the three host nations—William Ruto of Kenya, Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, and Yoweri Museveni of Uganda—for their leadership and commitment to the tournament’s preparations. “I am impressed with the ongoing construction and renovations of the football infrastructure and facilities in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. I am confident that the stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other infrastructure will be at the requisite CAF standards for hosting, in August 2025, a very successful TotalEnergies African Nations Championship,” Dr. Motsepe stated.
When will the draw for the CHAN 2024 tournament take place?
As part of the preparation process, CAF announced that the draw for the CHAN tournament will still take place as planned on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, in Nairobi, Kenya, at 8:00 PM local time.
The exact commencement date for CHAN 2024 in August 2025 will be announced later.
