What is so special about the Autism Aid App?
The Autism Aid App stands out as the first Android application of its kind in the region, meticulously designed to enhance the lives of children with autism. This pioneering platform seeks to improve autism therapy, raise awareness, and facilitate better integration of individuals with autism into society—a critical mission considering that autism, a lifelong developmental disorder, impacts communication and sensory processing.

Ndisanze, a long-time advocate for autism awareness, highlighted the app’s multifaceted approach to providing comprehensive support. “The Autism Aid App offers a helpline service for families, enabling them to access professional advice on caring for their children,” Ndisanze explained. The app also features a Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), specifically tailored to assist children with autism in communicating more effectively. Additionally, it includes an awareness platform aimed at educating the public about autism, fostering greater understanding and acceptance within society.
When was the idea to create the Autism Aid App conceived by Elie Ndisanze?
The journey to develop the Autism Aid App began in 2014 when Autism Ambassadors of Rwanda won the Digital Changemakers Competition. This achievement secured crucial funding and support from Reach for Change, paving the way for the app’s full implementation. Ndisanze’s vision transcends Rwanda’s borders, with ambitious plans to introduce the Autism Aid App to all 193 United Nations member countries.
“It is time for all of us to accept children living with autism in society and provide them with the resources they need to thrive,” Ndisanze asserted. “Our most cherished asset is the education and improved lives of autistic children. We are committed to developing programs that cater to their needs and interests.”
The app’s launch was marked by a special ceremony where five children—three girls and two boys—were honored as Global Icons of the Autism Aid App. These young ambassadors symbolize the app’s potential to make a tangible impact on real lives. This momentous launch represents a hopeful step forward, setting a new standard for digital tools in the field and offering a brighter future for children with autism.
Ndisanze’s dedication to improving the lives of those with autism through technological innovation underscores the power of entrepreneurship to drive social change. As the Autism Aid App continues to gain traction, it serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating how compassionate visionaries can create tools that break down barriers and build more inclusive communities.
