When did Emmanuel Okwi Retire from International Football?
Yesterday, 18 March 2025, Uganda Cranes captain Arnold Emmanuel Okwi has officially announced his retirement from international football. The 32-year-old forward shared the news through his social media platforms, marking the end of a remarkable career with the national team.

Why did Emmanuel Okwi Retire?
In his heartfelt farewell message, Okwi expressed his deep gratitude for the opportunity to represent Uganda on the international stage. He described donning the Uganda Cranes jersey as a dream come true and leading the team as captain as a privilege.
“Representing my country on the international stage has been a fulfilling dream that came true. Donning the Uganda Cranes shirt always left a special feeling, and captaining our team was an absolute privilege and honour,” Okwi wrote.
He also acknowledged the new era of Ugandan football, with East Africa set to host the CHAN tournament in August and the AFCON in 2027. He emphasized that the time had come for him to step aside and allow young footballers to take center stage.
“I believe it is time for me to bow out and pave the way for our talented young football players,” he added.
Okwi extended his appreciation to the fans, his family, former Uganda Cranes coach Bobby Williamson—who gave him his national team debut—and all the coaches and teammates he worked with over the years. He also thanked the leadership at the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) for their support throughout his career.
When did Emmanuel Okwi join the football world?
Since making his debut for Uganda in 2009, Okwi has been an integral part of the national team. Over the years, he earned 95 caps and scored 28 goals, making him one of Uganda’s most prolific scorers. Out of these, 22 goals came in competitive matches, the most by any Ugandan footballer.
One of his standout moments came during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where he scored crucial goals against DR Congo and Zimbabwe. Following the retirement of legendary goalkeeper Denis Onyango in 2021, Okwi was named captain of the Uganda Cranes, a role he held until his retirement. His final appearance for the national team came in 2023 during the Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers.

Club Career and Achievements
Away from the national team, Okwi has had a distinguished club career, playing for teams across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. He started at SC Villa in Uganda before moving to Tanzania’s Simba SC, where he made a name for himself as a lethal forward.
His career saw him play for several top clubs, including Young Africans (Tanzania), Etoile du Sahel (Tunisia), SønderjyskE (Denmark), Al Ittihad (Egypt), Al Zawra’a (Iraq), and Erbil SC (Iraq). Currently, he plays for Kiyovu SC in Rwanda.
A Lasting Legacy
Emmanuel Okwi’s retirement marks the end of an era for Ugandan football. His leadership, goal-scoring ability, and dedication to the national team have left an indelible mark on the sport. As Uganda prepares for the next generation of footballers, Okwi’s contributions will serve as an inspiration for those who aspire to wear the national team jersey.
His journey—from a promising young player at SC Villa to becoming Uganda Cranes’ captain—will forever be remembered as one of determination, excellence, and patriotism.
