The National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially announced lawyer Erias Luyimbazi Nalukoola as its flag bearer for the upcoming Kawempe North parliamentary by-election. This seat became vacant following the recent passing of MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, a fellow NUP member.
In a competitive selection process, Mr. Nalukoola emerged victorious among ten aspirants, securing 71% of the votes. The other contenders included Umar Magala, Muhammad Lusswa Luwemba, Mathias Mulumba, Moses Nsereko, Salim Sserunkuuma, Fredrick Kakika, Charles Rubagumya, Kenneth Ssekungu, and Saul Kulya Zziwa.
Upon receiving the nomination, Mr. Nalukoola expressed his gratitude to NUP, stating, “I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation to NUP for blessing me to be the party flag bearer for Kawempe North MP seat. I am a loyal member of the National Unity Platform whose affiliation should not be put to the question.”
The party’s Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya, emphasized the transparency of the selection process, noting that the vetting process accounted for 40%, the debate 10%, and ground visibility and mobilization 50%. He urged party members to unite behind Mr. Nalukoola, acknowledging that while many had their preferred candidates, only one could be chosen.
Mr. Nalukoola, a seasoned lawyer, was previously a long-serving legal advisor for the Democratic Party (DP). He resigned from this position in October 2024, citing disagreements over a cooperation agreement between DP and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). In his resignation letter, he expressed concerns about the party’s direction and leadership decisions.
With his nomination, Mr. Nalukoola is set to contest in the by-election scheduled for March 13, where he will face candidates from other political parties vying for the Kawempe North seat.
