What was the most outstanding trend for the UACE 2024 Top Schools?
The 2024 UACE results, released on March 15, 2025, showcased significant progress in several subjects, with Biology standing out as the most improved compared to 2023. Uneb also reported notable gains in Economics, Literature in English, and Physics at the Principal pass level (A-E). These examinations, the final set released by Uneb for the 2024 academic year, were conducted between November 11 and December 6, 2024.
According to Mr. Dan Odongo, a total of 141,996 candidates registered for the exams, a substantial rise of 31,430 (28.4%) from the 110,566 candidates in 2023. This increase, described as remarkable by Odongo, included 61,957 female candidates (43.6%) and 80,039 males (56.4%). Males also made up 53.1% of the additional candidates. Odongo suggested that changes in admission requirements for primary school teacher training might have encouraged more students to pursue UACE after completing their Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE).
Which was the best-performed subject according to the 2024 UACE results?
Biology’s performance in 2024 marked a dramatic improvement over the previous year. Of the 24,634 candidates who took the subject, 1.1% (270) earned an A, and 57.7% (14,213) achieved a Principal pass. In contrast, in 2023, only 2% (398) of 19,934 candidates scored an A, with 45.2% (9,010) securing a Principal pass. This upward trend comes after years of concern over poor performance in science subjects, particularly Biology.
Historically, Biology has posed challenges for students. A Makerere University analysis of nearly five decades of UACE results revealed persistent struggles since the late 1970s. For instance, in 2018, only one of 13,061 candidates nationwide scored an A, and nearly 80% scored O or F (fail). In 2020, however, 1.2% (181) of 15,058 candidates achieved an A, with 89% passing the subject—a rare bright spot. Yet, the decline returned in 2022, when just 0.1% (around 18 candidates) earned an A, and 32.6% (5,866) failed.
In response to this trend, Makerere University launched a study in 2023, led by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs, to investigate the causes of Biology’s poor performance. Prof Arthur Tugume, Dean of the School of Bioscience, explained that the study will explore factors such as teacher qualifications, curriculum design, laboratory conditions, and students’ attitudes toward the subject. Experts believe these challenges in Biology have broader implications, affecting life sciences, research, and key sectors dependent on biological expertise.
Which other subjects were well performed by the UACE 2024 Top Schools?
Beyond Biology, Economics saw gains in 2024, with 1.9% (600) of 31,579 candidates scoring an A and 60.6% (19,136) earning a Principal pass, compared to 1.1% (335) and 52.5% (15,992) of 30,461 candidates in 2023. Literature in English also improved, with 2.9% (237) of 8,192 candidates achieving an A and 84.7% (6,938) securing a Principal pass, up from 1.8% (128) and 78% (5,561) of 7,130 candidates in 2023. Physics followed suit, with 6.6% (1,551) of 23,508 candidates earning an A and 57.3% (13,470) passing, compared to 2.3% (393) and 48.3% (8,262) of 17,106 candidates the previous year.
Rising Interest in Sciences according to the 2024 UACE results
UNEB noted a gradual increase in candidates taking Mathematics and science subjects, with Mathematics seeing the largest jump—from 45,414 in 2023 to 58,495 in 2024. Physics candidates rose from 17,106 to 23,679, Chemistry from 21,779 to 29,283, and Biology from 19,934 to 24,853. However, Mr. Odongo pointed out that these numbers still represent less than half of the total candidature, likely due to low pass rates in sciences at the UCE level.
John Kenny Adeya is the proprietor and author of Kampala Edge Times magazine and has won a couple of awards for fighting negative social behavior such as corporal punishment against children. He is a Ugandan journalist focused on spreading positive information about Africa.
