Film Highlights
Barbie Dominates the Film Side
Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster film, Barbie, mirrored its summer box office success by leading the overall motion picture nominations. It secured nominations in nine categories, including Best Picture — Musical or Comedy, Best Director (Gerwig), Best Actress — Musical or Comedy (Margot Robbie), and Best Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling). Additionally, three nominations in the Best Original Song category featured tunes by Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, and Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken.”
In the ongoing Barbenheimer battle, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer earned eight nominations, closely followed by Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things with seven each. Celine Song’s breakout drama Past Lives received five nominations, including a surprising nod for Song in the Best Director category.
However, some major contenders, including Taraji P. Henson for The Color Purple in Best Supporting Actress, were shockingly snubbed. The film itself was also notably absent from the Best Picture — Musical or Comedy nominations list.
TV Excellence | Golden Globes Nominations
In the television categories, the final season of Succession added nine nominations to its impressive series-long haul. Cast members Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin, Matthew Macfadyen, J. Smith Cameron, Alexander Skarsgård, and Alan Ruck all secured spots on the Globes’ list.
The Bear and Only Murders in the Building trailed behind Succession with five nominations each. Major stars in both projects, including Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Abby Elliott, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez, and Meryl Streep, were recognized among the acting set.
Network Dominance | Golden Globes Nominations
HBO and Max led the TV nominees with 17 network nods, closely followed by Netflix with 15. In the film nominations, Netflix led with placements in 13 categories, followed closely by Warner Bros. with 12.
New Competitive Categories
This edition of the Golden Globes introduces two new competitive categories: Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in Motion Pictures for theatrical projects grossing at least $150 million globally (with $100 million from domestic ticket sales), and Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television recognizing TV-based stand-up comedy sets of at least 30 minutes.
Swift’s Eras Tour film, breaking box office records for non-fiction films, is among the inaugural Box Office Achievement nominees alongside titles such as Barbie, Oppenheimer, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3, and more.
Recent Changes and Awards Night Details
These changes were announced in September, months after the Golden Globes revealed plans to dissolve the historic Hollywood Foreign Press Association group of journalists. The move followed years of controversy, highlighted by a 2021 exposé revealing a lack of Black journalists among the organization’s members.
In November, it was announced that the Globes would move to CBS (with a companion live stream on Paramount+) in 2024, concluding decades of broadcasts on NBC.
The 2024 Golden Globes ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, January 7, at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on CBS and Paramount+.
