Here is an example of a story of a child who has been saved by Compassion.
Where Does Compassion Work?
Currently, the organization sponsors kids in 27 countries. In Africa, they work in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Togo, Malawi and Uganda. In Central America, they work in the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua and Mexico.
A child in Uganda receives sponsorship by the organization from toddler age until they are 22. Through their sponsorship, the child enjoys gifts, letters, personal needs and tuition. The organization usually works with churches based in the areas of the need children. The headquarters regularly send funds and kids learn to participate in several hands-on activities.
Since 1980, Compassion Uganda has been supporting the mentorship of life skills. This is to ensure that kids don’t finish school as job seekers, but rather job creators.
When Was Compassion International Founded?
In 1952, Everett Swanson founded The Everett Swanson Evangelistic Association. The association was meant to help children who lost their parents during the war in South Korea. Swanson moved there to preach the gospel to the troops of the army.
However, he was heartbroken when he saw children orphaned by the war. In 1953, he started raising funds, and the next year he developed sponsorship programs to help support orphans for a few dollars a month. In 1963, the association’s name changed to Compassion, Inc. This organization got it’s name from Jesus’ words “I have compassion on the multitude. I will not send them away hungry” (Matthew 15.32).
How Does Compassion Work?
Sponsored children are provided food and clean water, medical care, education, life-skills training, and spiritual guidance through a direct sponsorship.
The criteria for choosing the child to sponsor is entirely based on the sponsor’s selection. From then, there is a two-way communication between the sponsored child and the sponsor.
