You can not talk about Ugandan music or film industry without talking about Hellen Lukoma. Well, that’s true at least for most of us who grew up in the 2000s. The Ugandan film industry has slithered, crawled, stood up, fallen, walked and run. It’s not easy for anyone to sprout up in the MDD industry and stand out in a Africa. She has acted with Bobi Wine in Situka, played in theaters and sang several songs. I had the opportunity to meet popular actress and Olinye Ya Majje singer, Hellen Lukoma and this is everything she told me!

Who is Hellen Lukoma?
Hi, my name is Helen Lukoma. I am an artist, a musician and a fashion designer. I am a model and I am everything art. But also, I am a parent, a friend, and a sibling. I come from a family of six. We are six, and I am the last born. I was born to Mukyala Lukoma, my mum, and Lukoma Godfrey Kiyaga, my dad (RIP). I’m lucky to have been born in Makindye. As I grew up, I am a married woman with children living very far, far, far. Can’t tell you where I live, but I live in Uganda.
Where does Hellen Lukoma start her stride?
My musical journey and my acting journey started musically in church. Just like everyone else Church was the basic foundation for me, the best foundation for me. Then I did solos in school. I was Miss Interact as well as Miss Lubiri. I was doing everything entertainment in school. Then lucky enough, I got a chance to join the Obsessions. That was my first professional job. At Obsessions, we were dancers and musicians. I learned a lot from Obsessions. I learned how to do music and also how to do vocals. They girl group groomed me. Unfortunately our boss was too harsh that he never allowed me to try any other talents including acting. For this reason I don’t support anyone joining any girl groups for music or whatsoever.
After Obsessions, I joined HB Toxic, under Talent Africa, managed by Ali Alibai, the best manager ever. I’m very grateful to him. Then I went into my solo career as a musician under C.A.N Music.

When did Hellen Lukoma start acting movies and series?
My acting career started on stage with Obsessions although my boss never believed in my acting skills. I appeared in Queen of Sheba, then eventually got a chance through Mr Kwezi Kaganda to join The Hostel. Everyone knows The Hostel, the popular NTV show that aired everywhere in Africa. It was my first paid professional job. Then I started doing my solo career acting alone and doing music alone.
Where did you attain your education?
About my school background, I actually don’t remember my nursery school. I went to a nursery school commonly known as Mother Care, then BBCN, and then Shimoni Demonstration School which was the best during my era. After that, I went to various secondary schools for two years. Then I joined Agha Khan, where I also joined entertainment and Obsessions. I graduated from MUBS with a Bachelor’s in International Business.

Despite challenges, I strive to be a better mother, actress, and person.
How Hellen Lukoma maintains her beauty even through motherhood
Beauty is not just physical; it’s also about the heart. I believe in taking care of my skin, eating well, and staying natural. I don’t work out much, but I watch what I eat and maintain a skincare routine. Staying natural and stress-free is essential.

How Hellen jumped onto the Music Industry
I started singing in church and participating in school entertainment activities. I was discovered by Obsessions during a school event and joined them while still in school. This opportunity helped me develop my musical and acting skills. Seeing myself on TV for the first time was an exciting feeling. My family supported me, and it was a proud moment when they recognized my work on television.

Toughest moments and biggest achievement of Hellen Lukoma
My greatest motivation is myself. Family and the desire to overcome life’s challenges drive me to succeed. The toughest moment in my life was losing my father, which brought grief and family conflicts. Despite this, I strive to protect and support my family. My biggest achievement in life is having children. In my career, it’s being able to stand alone as a single musician and actress, presenting my art to the world.
