Kidepo Valley Conservation Area dominated the 6th edition of the Inter Conservation Area Games (#InterCAGames2024), which concluded on Saturday, 14th September 2024, at the Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area’s Nyamugasani range ground. This year’s event brought together various conservation areas under the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), highlighting the talent, teamwork, and competitive spirit of UWA’s conservation teams.
The event kicked off on Monday, 9th September, in a unique fashion. UWA’s Acting Executive Director, Masaba Stephen, opened the games with a symbolic penalty kick against Pontius Ezuma, the Chief Warden of Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area. This gesture set the tone for an exciting week of competition.
Mount Elgon Takes Volleyball Championship
The volleyball tournament culminated in a thrilling final between Mount Elgon Conservation Area (MECA) and the hosts, Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area (QECA). MECA emerged victorious, winning the championship with a dominant 3-0 sets victory. Their teamwork and skill were unmatched, making them the champions of the volleyball competition.
While Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area fell short in volleyball, they found success on the football field. Their men’s football team delivered an outstanding performance, securing victory in the final and claiming the football championship. This win showcased their resilience and determination across the different sports categories.
Kidepo Valley Triumphs in Netball
Kidepo Valley Conservation Area (KVCA) proved to be a force to reckon with in netball. Their ladies’ team emerged as champions, defeating the previously unbeaten Murchison Falls Conservation Area (MFCA) by a narrow 28-27 margin. KVCA’s victory was hard-fought, with every point contested fiercely.
The final standings In netball saw Kidepo Valley taking gold, Murchison Falls earning silver, and Kibale securing bronze. This intense competition highlighted the strength and determination of all the teams involved.
Range Shooting and Other Competitions
Participants also tested their shooting skills in a range shooting exercise before the games began. The shooting contests, which included the “falling plates” event, sharpened the aim and precision of the rangers. Kidepo Valley Conservation Area again excelled, winning in both shooting and darts competitions.
The games not only showcased the athletic talents of UWA rangers but also fostered camaraderie and teamwork among conservation areas. The week was filled with thrilling matches, high-energy performances, and the spirit of sportsmanship. Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area, as hosts, played a pivotal role in ensuring the event’s success, although they fell short in winning the volleyball championship.
