In Manchester United’s first pre-season friendly against Leeds, it was the performance of 18-year-old academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo that stole the spotlight.
Despite the high-profile debut of recent signing Mason Mount, Mainoo’s impressive display on the pitch left fans buzzing with excitement for the young midfielder’s potential.
Mount, who joined the Red Devils in a £60 million transfer from Chelsea just last week, started the match and played 45 minutes before being substituted at halftime.
While his debut was met with satisfaction from many fans, it was Mainoo who garnered most of the attention with his standout performance.
Kobbie Mainoo a real baller
One aspect that Mount brings to United’s midfield is his energy and dynamism, which was on display during his time on the pitch.
However, it was Mainoo who showcased his comfort in possession and ability to take the ball on the half-turn, impressing spectators with his composure and skill. This prompted Portugal International Bruno Fernandes to praise Mainoo’s performance on Instagram
At just 18 years old, Mainoo demonstrated a level of maturity and talent that bodes well for his future at the club. The match also provided an opportunity for other young players to shine.
Hannibal Mejbri showcased his engine and creativity from the number 10 position, while Forson, although not expected to receive many pre-season minutes once the internationals return, had a notable performance.
Additionally, Licha showed that he hasn’t lost a step, and it was mildly amusing to watch Heaton play as a sweeper-keeper.Jadon Sancho, United’s marquee signing, displayed glimpses of his dribbling ability but also highlighted the team’s need for a number nine.
Despite this, it was Emeran and Hugill who sealed the victory for United with their goals in the 65th and 80th minutes, respectively. The match against Leeds was the start of United’s pre-season schedule, held in Oslo, Norway.
Mainoo and the Young Players Step up
The youthful lineup fielded by manager Erik ten Hag included Mason Mount as his first signing of the summer, along with a mix of senior players and academy talents.
With players like Dean Henderson, Donny van de Beek, Anthony Martial, and Antony not making the trip, it was an opportunity for the youngsters to make their mark.At half-time, Ten Hag made the bold decision to change the entire team, giving academy players a chance to shine.
Against a competitive Leeds side, the young talents more than held their own. Noam Emeran and Joe Hugill both found the net to secure a 2-0 victory for United, capping off an encouraging performance from the Red Devils’ youth.
As Manchester United’s pre-season preparations continue, the standout display from Kobbie Mainoo and the promising performances of other academy graduates offer a glimpse into a bright future for the club. With the blend of experienced signings and talented youngsters, United fans have reason to be optimistic as they look forward to the upcoming season.
