Identifying the Challenges of Expired Courses

Several factors have contributed to the accreditation concerns at Makerere University. Both the university and The National Council for Higher Education ( NCHE ) share responsibility for the situation.

Delays in the review process of programs by departments, schools, and colleges, as well as at the Senate level, have led to unacceptable lapses in re-accreditation.

Similarly, the NCHE has experienced delays in processing programs for accreditation and updating their website, which has exacerbated the problem.

Programs Affected

The programs affected by accreditation issues fall into three categories:

Discontinued or Merged Programs: Some programs have been discontinued or merged with others, rendering their accreditation status obsolete.

Programs Under Review: Several programs have been submitted to the NCHE for accreditation but are awaiting final approval.

Programs Undergoing Internal Review: A number of programs at Makerere University are currently in the process of being reviewed internally before being submitted for accreditation.

Rectifying the Situation of Expired Courses

Makerere University recognizes the need to rectify these accreditation challenges promptly. Efforts are underway to collaborate with the NCHE to correct errors on their website, ensuring accurate and up-to-date information is available.

Furthermore, the university has issued notifications to colleagues responsible for programs with expired accreditation, urging them to submit the reviewed programs within the given deadline.

Improving Internal Systems

To prevent such accreditation issues from recurring, Makerere University has implemented measures to strengthen its internal systems. The Academic Registrar has developed a comprehensive database to track the accreditation status of all academic programs.

Colleagues overseeing these programs have been assigned the responsibility of monitoring their accreditation status to avoid any future lapses. This proactive approach will ensure timely compliance with accreditation requirements and maintain the university’s reputation.

Maintaining International Reputation

Despite the negative press surrounding the accreditation challenges, it is important to acknowledge that Makerere University’s programs continue to be highly regarded internationally.

The university remains committed to providing quality education and upholding academic standards. Efforts are underway to overcome the current challenges and restore confidence in the accreditation process. Makerere University aims to build a strong foundation for the future and reinforce its position as a leading educational institution in Uganda and beyond.

Conclusion

Makerere University is taking decisive action to address the accreditation challenges faced by some of its academic programs. By collaborating with the NCHE and implementing internal improvements, the university aims to rectify the situation and prevent future lapses.

The commitment to quality education and maintaining its international reputation remains a top priority for Makerere University. Through these collective efforts, the university is confident in overcoming the current challenges and continuing to provide excellent educational opportunities for its students.
