As a professional footballer, McCarthy had an illustrious career, playing for several renowned clubs, including Ajax, Celta Vigo, Porto, Blackburn Rovers, and West Ham United. He was formerly with Manchester United as a striker coach, having joined the team on July 30, 2022 under Erik ten Hag. However, he left at the start of the 2024/25 season.
