Goals from the Portuguese duo Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes plus World Cup Winning French Defender Raphael Varane saw United ease past Brentford on Monday May , 02nd .
The Score line ended 3- 0 in what was one of the best performances in a rather disappointing campaign.
The Shattered Dreams
After finishing second in last season’s precarious campaign, United had high hopes for this season. In fact they began with a 5-0 thrashing of Leeds. They followed up with an emphatic 4-0 win over Newcastle. Everything seemed just fine. But the future is unpredictable as always.
With the arrivals of the all-time Top Scorer in Men’s International Football Cristiano Ronaldo, Versatile talented England winger Jadon Sancho and World Cup Winning French Defender Raphael Varane, surely the sky was the limit.
Sad as it is , Manchester United even at some point in the season topped the table. Slowly but surely, the digression began. A lot of of factors can be attributed to this but the blame game should be skipped for now. What has happened has happened. Time to focus on the future.
Project Europa League
United’s Monday win left them in the sixth position on the English Premier League table. They have played 36 games and are 8 points clear of West Ham United in the Seventh. West Ham still has three games to play. Brighton and Crystal Palace will host United respectively in the last two games if the season.
Failure to clinch top 4 position means United will now turn their focus on Europa League. At least that will be a consolation for missing out on Champions League. The much anticipated rebuild with the incoming coach Erik Ten Hag will have some European Football to savour.
However, United need to avoid failure in their last two games least they miss out on Europa League. Its a worst case scenario that is being considered here If Manchester United loses their last two games and West Ham wins, the latter will qualify for Europa.
Basically, United need to win at least one game or have two draws. That aside, speculation is ongoing if Cristiano Ronaldo will actually remain and be part of the squad that will play in Europa. Or is he also joining Juan Mata ,Edinson Cavani ,Jesse Lingard,Nemanja Matic and co who leaving at the end of the season due to expiry of their contracts?
