The people of Nakasongola District are grieving the loss of their former Woman Member of Parliament, Margaret Komuhangi, who passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2025. The news of her untimely demise has left the district in shock, as residents reflect on her contributions to community development and women’s empowerment.

Who was Margaret Komuhangi?

Komuhangi served as Nakasongola’s Woman MP for two consecutive terms, from 2011 to 2021. During her tenure, she spearheaded several transformative initiatives aimed at improving the lives of her constituents. She was particularly known for her dedication to advancing women’s economic independence and advocating for better infrastructure in the district.

What killed Margaret Komuhangi?

Her death, which occurred at a health facility in India due to undisclosed health complications, has drawn an outpouring of tributes from district leaders and residents alike.

“I don’t have the full details about her passing, but the early morning news is deeply saddening. Komuhangi was a mother figure to many and played a pivotal role in uplifting the welfare of women in Nakasongola through various projects,” said Mr. Sam Kigula, the Nakasongola District LC5 Chairperson.

Canon Christopher Nkoyoyo, the district’s NRM party Chairperson, also expressed his grief, describing Komuhangi as a cornerstone of Nakasongola’s development. “She greatly contributed to empowering women and initiating impactful community projects. Her passing is a great loss to us all,” he said.

Beyond her work in parliament, Komuhangi was instrumental in creating programs that provided entrepreneurial skills to women, improved access to microfinance services, and promoted healthcare and education for underserved communities.

When did Margaret Komuhangi quit politics?

Her political journey, however, came to an end in 2021 when she lost her seat to Ms. Victorious Zawedde, an independent candidate, during the general elections. Despite stepping away from active politics, Komuhangi remained an influential figure in Nakasongola, known for her humility and unwavering commitment to the district’s progress.

Details of her funeral arrangements are yet to be announced as the family and government finalize plans to honor her memory.

As Nakasongola mourns, many residents continue to share memories of Komuhangi’s impactful legacy, remembering her as a leader who prioritized the needs of the community. Her passing marks the end of an era, but her contributions will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations.
