Ugandan singer-songwriter Azawi has officially dropped the video for her viral song, “Masavu.” The song was released in March 2024, and it immediately took on a life of its own, dominating airwaves countrywide. Before we knew it, something unusual happened: an AI-generated version of the song surfaced, sampling the voice of the late singer Mowzey Radio.
When did Azawi release Masavu Official Video?
Today, April 4th, 2024, Azawi premiered the official video of her hit song, “Masavu.” This is an honest review of the video. The song starts by showing vendors in the typical Ugandan local market setting. Azawi is a fashion designer or tailor in the video. We then see a well-built gentleman with a beard dressed in an aesthetic suit with Kitenge print all over. He walks into Azawi’s Kitenge fashion store and they hug before he proceeds to the local restaurant behind the store.
Kitenge is probably in Azawi’s DNA; most of her songs feature people wearing clothes with African print or Kitenge. We could safely refer to it as her signature, much like recognizing a slow song video with less color as Adele’s.
Who is the main character in the Masavu Official video?
We are then introduced to a fair, dark-skinned, slender girl who is a waitress in the local restaurant. We later will learn that the handsome man is walking to her. She is busy serving food to customers in the restaurant diligently like any girl from a humble African background. When Azawi starts to sing, “Tebba, Tebba, Bweba’mbuuza kyoli gyendi…”, the gentleman is behind the girl, covering her eyes. This romantic gesture is the ideal experience the average Ugandan girl pictures in her head. Ugandan girls love to be treated like princesses and given money as well as presents.
The plot twist in Masavu
When the gentleman takes his hands off her eyes, the beautiful girl sees a banquet of flowers before her eyes. She is so amazed, and we can almost smell the butterflies growling in her stomach. But wait, just before she swallows the showers of romance and his warm embrace, there’s more. The gentleman goes down on one knee, opens up an engagement ring. He says those four little words, and she says YES. It feels like Romeo and Juliet, or even sweeter, right? The song continues with that predictable yet catchy pattern until we see the couple’s wedding, and the whole world sings, “Masavu atte nga Gokya!”
What is special about the Azawi?
One interesting fact about this music video is that Azawi did not put herself as the main character. She doesn’t take center stage, as we see most Ugandan singers do in their videos. This tactic works so well for the most successful singers and writers in the world, like Calvin Harris, Sia, Mr EAZI, and more. The magic in giving the spotlight to a different face is that viewers perceive the owner of the song as a humble person. Azawi will make a video and make you think she has less influence on the production. But the truth is that she does, and she clearly knows how to make videos that focus on the storyline other than the star.
Will the Video be a success?
The “Masavu” video is well-edited and works very well for Ugandan audiences because the song is heading to 10,000 views on YouTube in just less than 5 hours since its release. What do you think about the song? Shout out to Azawi for making such classic pieces of art and shining on Apple Music!
