Mason Greenwood switches allegiance to Jamaica from England, In a significant development in international football, Greenwood has officially switched his international allegiance from England to Jamaica. This decision comes after the Football Association (FA) informed Greenwood that he would no longer be considered for England selection, following his suspension and legal challenges over the past few years.
Why Mason Greenwood Switches allegiance between England and Jamaican National Team
Greenwood, who made his sole appearance for the England senior team in September 2020, was sidelined from national selection after being sent home for breaching COVID-19 quarantine guidelines during that period. In January 2022, he faced serious charges, including attempted rape and assault, which were subsequently dropped in February 2023. Despite the legal clearance, the FA remained hesitant to reintegrate him into the national squad due to concerns over potential adverse publicity.
Mason Greenwood’s Path to Representing Jamaica: How Is He Eligible?
Eligible to represent Jamaica through his father, Greenwood has completed the necessary paperwork to formalize his switch under FIFA regulations. According to FIFA’s eligibility rules, players who have featured in no more than three competitive matches before turning 21 can change their national affiliation. Greenwood’s single appearance for England at the age of 18 falls within this criterion, facilitating his transition to the Jamaican national team.
Currently plying his trade with Olympique de Marseille in Ligue 1, Greenwood has experienced a resurgence in his club career. After a loan spell at Getafe, he secured a permanent move to Marseille, where he has made a notable impact with 13 goals in 20 appearances across all competitions.
Steve McClaren, the former England manager and current head coach of the Jamaican national team, has been instrumental in Greenwood’s decision. McClaren, who has maintained regular communication with the player, expressed optimism about Greenwood’s future with the Reggae Boyz. He anticipates Greenwood’s participation in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers scheduled for June, although Marseille is unlikely to release him for friendly matches in March.
