Morocco’s Short Stature Team ( Dwarf Football Team ) , founded in 2017, is making waves in the world of dwarf football. The team, led by captain Nizar Benkettaba, is set to face Bolivia in their opening game of the inaugural international dwarf football competition, which is currently underway in Argentina.
What is Dwarf Football?
Dwarf football, also known as short stature football, is a form of football specifically designed for individuals with dwarfism. The rules are similar to traditional football, but with some modifications to ensure the safety and fairness of the game. For instance ,heading the ball is prohibited due to the increased risk of spinal cord injury in athletes with dwarfism. Additionally, slide tackling is not allowed to minimize the risk of serious collisions.
The inaugural international competition, taking place in Argentina, brings together teams from around the world to compete for the coveted title. Morocco, having secured their spot by defeating Iraq in May 2022, is eager to showcase their skills and determination on the international stage.
Morocco’s Preparation and Expectations
The Moroccan team has been diligently preparing for this tournament, undergoing rigorous training and tactical sessions. Captain Benkettaba expressed the team’s readiness and confidence, stating, “The players are ready. They are not afraid.” With their unwavering spirit and commitment, Morocco is poised to make a strong impression in this international competition.
Dwarf Football: Promoting Inclusivity and Combating Discrimination
Beyond the thrill of competition, dwarf football serves as a powerful platform for promoting inclusivity and challenging discrimination against dwarfism. The Dwarf Copa America, as the tournament is known in Spanish, aims to demonstrate that individuals with dwarfism have the same potential and capabilities as anyone else.
Urumar Miranda, a Brazilian footballer, eloquently captured the essence of this event, stating, “The Dwarf Copa America is an example of inclusion to demonstrate that we, despite having different capacities, are common people and we can do sports and demonstrate our abilities.”
Morocco’s Journey in This Kind of Football
Morocco’s involvement in dwarf football is relatively recent, but their progress has been remarkable. The establishment of the Moroccan Association for Short Stature in 2018 marked a significant step forward, providing a platform for athletes with dwarfism to connect, train, and compete.
With over 300 players under its banner, the association is actively working to integrate dwarfism into Moroccan society.
Morocco’s Participation in Copa America Baja Talla
In 2022, Morocco made history by becoming the first African and Arab team to participate in the Copa America Baja Talla, held in Lima, Peru. This participation further solidified Morocco’s position as a rising star in the world of dwarf football.
Morocco’s Short Stature Team is an inspiration to athletes with dwarfism worldwide. Their dedication, passion, and unwavering spirit are breaking down barriers and fostering a more inclusive sporting landscape.
As they embark on their journey at the international dwarf football competition in Argentina, the Moroccan team carries the hopes and dreams of countless individuals, demonstrating that dwarfism is not a limitation but a unique perspective that enriches the world of sports.
