Ms Uba said this during the swearing in of Batch ‘C’ Stream II Corps members.The advice given comes in the backdrop of the mindset held by many youths. The mindset that one ought to get a white collar job in order to make it in life.
The NYSC is a scheme in Nigeria that aims at reconstruction, reconciliation and rebuilding the Country after the Nigerian Civil War .This has been achieved through working with the paradigm thg states that “ the future if any country depends on the youth”.
Ugandan Youths Chasing White Collar Jobs
Apparently the desire for youths to gain white collar jobs doesn’t only exist in Nigeria.Ugandan youths and their counterparts all-over the world have this idea firmly imprinted on their minds.The vicoius circle consists of studying, graduating and getting a white collar job.
Last week December 7 – 10 saw Kyambogo University Students amounting to 12,080 in total graduating. This means all these will need a workstation where they should be employed in their various fields. Keep in mind that this is just one single University releasing a great number of students.
According to Uganda’s National Planning Authority statistics released in early 2021,700,000 people join the job market every year.This of course consists of individuals from different fields having different qualifications.Sadly, only 90,000 get work .This leaves almost 87% of people graduating jobless.

Life is full of alternatives though at times people didn’t like the available alternatives.In places where ‘white collar jobs’ have been inadequate, ‘ blue collar jobs’ have been the answer.These include bricklaying, tailoring, building, construction plus engineering.
The good news is that the government of Uganda has been working on Technical Vocational education and training ( TVET ) . It is through TVET that a majority of these blue collar jobs are taught. One is sure if coming out with a skill that can earn them a living without necessarily being employed.
However, a number of youths have a negative attitude towards TVET.They only dream of white collar jobs which is a risky path to take .
It is advisable that the various stake holders,parents and teachers join hands to sensitize the youths on their decisions regarding ‘ white collar jobs or blue collar jobs.
