The National Speech & Debate Championship (NSDC) is Uganda’s leading platform for young people to showcase their skills in debate and public speaking. Organized by the National Debate Council (NDC), this championship provides an opportunity for students to engage in meaningful discussions and develop critical thinking abilities. Furthermore, it allows them to address important issues facing their communities and the nation as a whole. This year, the 13th season, NSDC 2025, is set to be even bigger and better, offering more opportunities for students to participate.
Since its inception as the National Schools Debate Championship in 2009, NSDC has grown significantly. Originally focused solely on debate, it has now expanded to include various speech events. This expansion allows a wider range of students to participate and express themselves. In 2023, the championship was rebranded as the National Speech & Debate Championship to reflect this broader focus. Thus, the event now features public speaking, poetry, storytelling, and other individual events.
The Organizers: National Debate Council (NDC) Uganda
The National Debate Council (NDC) is the driving force behind NSDC. NDC is dedicated to promoting quality debate and speech in Uganda. They work with schools, institutions, and the wider community to foster a culture of informed discourse. Additionally, they train students in critical thinking, public speaking, and advocacy. Therefore, NDC plays a vital role in shaping the next generation of leaders.

Moreover, since 2019, NDC has focused on themes related to Transparency, Accountability, and Anti-Corruption (TAAC). These themes are integrated into the championship, addressing critical sectors such as education, health, and the environment. Consequently, students are encouraged to think deeply about these issues and propose solutions. In short, NDC is committed to empowering young people to make a positive impact.
