What really happened in Kitezi?
At least 12 bodies were recovered by Saturday evening after a massive rubbish heap in three sections of the Kiteezi landfill collapsed onto several homes, leaving families devastated. Among the deceased were three children, along with many heads of families. As rescue operations continue, the hope of finding survivors diminishes. Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, confirmed the tragic news, while the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Deputy Executive Director David Luyimbazi noted that the site was due for decommissioning, but a lack of funds delayed the process.




What has the government of Uganda done about Kitezi landslide?
The Ministry of Disaster Relief and Preparedness is organizing food and tents for displaced people and survivors as the community grapples with the aftermath of this disaster.
“As a nation, we have faced immense loss and grief. August has been a month of heartbreaks, with the tragic incidents at Kitezi and Lusanja, where a landfill collapse claimed numerous lives. This disaster has touched all of us,” Wawina said. “My deepest condolences go out to the families affected in Kitezi, Lusanja, and the entire community at large.”
Wawina described her visit to Kitezi as a profound and humbling experience. “What I witnessed was a reminder to appreciate the gift of life. I am motivated to praise God for the blessing of each new day,” she shared. “I urge everyone to visit Kitezi if possible; your presence can bring comfort and solace. Trust me, witnessing the aftermath firsthand will reaffirm your faith and remind you that God has a plan even in the darkest times.”
