Phina Mugerwa has opened up about one of the most tumultuous periods in her life—her ex-husband Ken Muyisa’s high-profile relationship with fellow musician Cindy Sanyu. Describing it as the worst time she’s ever faced, Mugerwa revealed the emotional toll it took on her and their son, Sandton.
Mugerwa, who had been in a long-distance relationship with Ken, was devastated when he left her for Cindy in 2013. At the time, their son was just three years old. The situation became even more painful when Cindy introduced Ken to her parents, a move that shattered Mugerwa’s world. Their relationship, however, was short-lived, ending the following year after financial troubles forced Cindy to become the primary breadwinner.
“The public scrutiny was overwhelming. My name was all over social media and newspapers, and it was incredibly stressful,” Mugerwa recounted. “It was the hardest period of my life, but it also pushed me to work harder and transform myself. I learned from it and moved on.”
The impact on their son was significant, with Mugerwa noting that Sandton struggled emotionally and at school. “He was deeply affected by seeing me in distress. The school headmistress even called me to discuss his emotional struggles,” she said. She sought support for him and worked to shield him from her own pain.
Despite the challenges, Mugerwa found unexpected support from influential friends, including Amelia Kyambadde and Capt. Mike Mukula, who offered her encouragement and advice. “Amelia became like a mother to me, and Capt. Mukula advised me to maintain my dignity in public. Their support was instrumental in my healing process,” she said.
In a surprising twist, Mugerwa chose to forgive Cindy and even campaigned for her when Cindy was elected as the Vice President of the Uganda Musicians Association. “I let go of any ill feelings and supported Cindy’s campaign. People were surprised, but I genuinely forgave her and wanted to move forward,” Mugerwa revealed.
Today, Mugerwa and Cindy have mended their relationship, with Mugerwa even playing a role in organizing Cindy’s 2023 baby shower. Mugerwa has also found happiness in her personal life, celebrating a colorful introduction ceremony with her new partner in 2023.
Through her journey, Mugerwa has emerged stronger, finding peace and new beginnings after the heartbreak.
