In one of the most astonishing drubbings in Premier League history, Liverpool thrashed Manchester United 7-0 at Anfield on Sunday. The victory saw Mohamed Salah break Liverpool’s record for the most goals scored in the Premier League.
The game began with real intensity from Liverpool, as Salah and Andy Robertson pressed hard for the opener. However, United actually had the better chances while the game was goalless, with Bruno Fernandes heading wide and Marcus Rashford finishing tamely.
When Casemiro’s header was ruled out for a clear offside, momentum seemed to be with the visitors. However, Cody Gakpo’s intervention changed that, as he was slipped in by Robertson and cut inside to finish fiercely into the far corner. Anfield erupted.
Salah leads Liverpool to stunning 7-0 victory
Liverpool went ahead by one at the interval, but the game still felt in the balance. However, two goals in quick succession early in the second half saw Liverpool completely overwhelm United.
Darwin Nunez headed in from close range after Luke Shaw’s loose pass, and Salah made Martinez look foolish on the flank before threading a pass through for Gakpo to finish neatly once more.
Salah then grabbed a goal of his own to make it four, lashing the ball high into David De Gea’s net after the ball deflected his way following Nunez’s breakaway. He then scored his second and Liverpool’s fifth, before setting up Firmino for the seventh.
In addition to the remarkable scoreline, Salah’s brace saw him break Liverpool’s record for the most goals scored in the Premier League. He now has 127 goals in the league, surpassing Robbie Fowler’s previous record of 126.
The victory was a much-needed boost for Liverpool’s hopes of a top-four finish, as they moved above Newcastle into fifth and are now just three points behind Tottenham with a game in hand.
For United, their slim hopes of muscling their way into the Premier League title race were undermined by this astonishing defeat, and their seven-year wait for a win at Anfield goes on.
Overall, the game will go down in history as one of the most memorable and lopsided clashes between these two great rivals.
