Rubongi Army SS achieved a historic feat on August 25th by securing all three positions in the ARC Writing Competition 2023. The winners of the competition were announced on the same day after a long period of anxious waiting.
The African Readers Conference (ARC) Writing Competition began in May 2023, with the call for submissions running from May 19th to June 30th, 2023. Numerous schools across Uganda participated in the competition, centered around the theme: “Redefining Pan-Africanism and African Unity through Digitalization.”
Participants were tasked with submitting an essay, poem, or short story. Irrespective of the chosen item or mode of writing, all participants were expected to exhibit creative writing skills and contribute to the discourse on Pan-Africanism in the digital age.
Unveiling the Winners of The African Readers Conference Writing Competition 2023
The winners were announced on the promised day by the event organizers, Read Us Africa, and their partners. The winners were meticulously selected from each region of Uganda based on the schools that had participated in the competition.
Rubongi Army SS claimed the lion’s share by securing the top three positions out of the five in the Eastern Uganda region.This was after overcoming over 30 submissions.This achievement was attributed to Nazziwa Leticia of S.3.E, Mambore John Chrysostom of S.2.E, and Eyit Alex of S.3.E. The fourth position was claimed by Muwanguzi Shalom of Budini Secondary School from Mbale.
In the Western region, Maryhill High School secured the first position, followed by Boni Consili Vocational SS – Isingiro, with Buryangsungwe taking the third and fourth positions. Boni Consili Vocational SS claimed the fifth position once again.
Moving to the Northern region, St. Katherine Girls SS achieved the first and third positions. Lango College secured the second position, while Ushindi Secondary School Arua secured the fifth.
Lastly, the Central region was dominated by Mt. St. Mary’s College Namagunga, securing the first and third positions. St. Mary’s College Kisubi took the second and fifth positions, while St. Mary’s SS Mutungo claimed the fourth position. The dominance in the Central region was clearly in favor of the St. Mary’s Schools.
When is the Awarding ceremony ?
The Awarding Ceremony of the ARC Writing Competition 2023 is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 30th, 2023, at Hive Collab in Kampala. Many schools, students, and delegates from all over the country are expected to be present to witness the awarding ceremony.
Additionally, this will mark the third annual African Readers Conference organized by Read Us Africa and their partners, including The Poet Association Uganda, Erudite Scholars Initiative, Izere Education, Hipipo, and more. The conference’s theme is “Reshaping the Literacy Agenda for Inclusion, Financing, and Digitalization.”
The historic event is anticipated to involve various local and international bodies, government entities, and NGOs.
