Early on Monday morning, Joel Ssenyonyi took to social media to share the exciting news. He posted a photo of himself clad in hospital wear, cradling his newborn son in his hands. In the caption, he expressed his happiness at becoming a father once again, stating, “This young man just landed.”

Ssenyonyi went on to reveal that the couple has named their newborn son Hezekiah, a name that carries a profound meaning – “God is my strength.” Both mother and baby are reported to be in good health, with Ssenyonyi playfully mentioning that he, as the father, is still recovering from the excitement.

Joel Ssenyonyi, a prominent Ugandan politician, and former journalist, was born on December 20, 1986, at Mulago Hospital to Mr Joseph Basekezi and Mrs Dorothy Nankunda. Hailing from Nakasongola, Ssenyonyi is a Muruuli by culture who spent his formative years in Kyengera, a suburb of Kampala. As the firstborn in a family of four, Ssenyonyi’s upbringing was marked by challenges and resilience.
Despite the complexities of his family structure—his father having multiple wives and children—Ssenyonyi’s mother played a pivotal role in bringing the family together. After their parents’ divorce, Ssenyonyi, his mother, three siblings, and a maid relocated to a one-roomed house, facing financial difficulties. He recalls the struggles, stating, “I remember my mother going without food some nights so we (children) could eat the little that was there.”

Ssenyonyi’s journey into journalism began during his S.6 vacation when he responded to a Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) news anchor advert. Despite lacking formal qualifications, he impressed the interviewers and secured a position, marking the start of his journalism career at the age of 19.
While working, Ssenyonyi pursued a Bachelor of Science in Business Statistics at Makerere University, showcasing his commitment to both his education and career. After five years as a news anchor and talk show host at NTV Uganda, Ssenyonyi left the journalism scene in May 2019.

Shortly after leaving NTV, Ssenyonyi made a surprising return to the public sphere, this time as the People Power spokesperson. Ssenyonyi, a devout Born Again Christian, attends Watoto Church in Ntinda and Watoto Central in Kampala.
