Strathmore University Triumphs at Olympia Debate Tournament

The 5th Edition of the Olympia Invitation Debate Tournament crowned Strathmore University’s Jeff Melita and Edwin Shamia Muchesia as champions. Their victory, along with the 2 million Ugandan shilling grand prize, showcased the power of debate in developing critical thinking and public speaking skills. Their win highlights not only their hard work but also the long history of the Olympia Debate Society in nurturing young debaters.

In addition,Strathmore University’s success emphasizes the importance of institutions like the Olympia Debate Society. The debate tournament began with arrivals on 28 March 2024 at Estella Country Hotel.A number of Universities participated but it’s Strathmore University,Makerere University,Kyambogo University and United States International University that managed to reach the finals. The tournament was conducted at Cavendish University Uganda but the finale was held at the prestigious Mestil Hotel, Mabira Hall.The event was summed up on Monday 1st April 2024 with Strathmore University all the way from Kenya lifting the trophy .

Debaters at the tournament tackled critical issues facing society today. One key motion, “This House Believes That liberal democracies should require religious institutions to omit conservative scriptures from their preaching,” sparked discussions on freedom of religion versus the values of a liberal democracy.
