Who is Suzan Wetsetse?
Suzan Wetsetse, the first-born daughter of Mr. Wetsetse Moses and the late Mrs. Wetsetse Mary, is a talented artist hailing from Bududa, Uganda. “I was born on May 25th, 1995, and I am a proud Gishu!” gladly exclaimed Suzan Wetsetse.
The enthusiastic local language singer has made significant contributions to her community through her music and advocacy work. In this article, we delve into Suzan’s journey as a rising star as well as her involvement with the 54 African Mamas initiative. We also strip her impact on the girl child in her home area, and her passion for gospel music.
How she became the 54 African Mamas Ambassador In Uganda
The 54 African Mamas is an empowering initiative dedicated to fighting for women’s rights in the music industry across the African continent. Suzan Wetsetse said, “My journey with the 54 African Mamas began when I released a song titled Lukoosi which advocates for respect and appreciation for women. The song impressed the organization’s management and I received an appointment as the Ugandan ambassador for the 54 African Mamas.”
According to the initiative, the music industry has long been perceived as a challenging and male-dominated field. This has consequently caused unique obstacles for women looking to establish themselves as musicians, producers, promoters, and technicians. “However, an exciting development is underway,” says the Ugandan ambassador, “as African women in music take center stage.”
The 54 African Mamas commences with the legacy of the late Lucky Dube’s esteemed backing vocalists. These ladies who always backed the reggae legend have started the emergence of a groundbreaking initiative called ToGaTa. The aim is to unite all 54 African countries under the banner of 54 African Mamas. This initiative addresses the pervasive issue of women’s abuse in the music industry while fostering economic development and cultural exchange. Suzan Wetsetse happens to be Uganda’s ambassador at this upcoming summit.
Suzan Wetsetse, Girl Power and the Shendi Project
As an ambassador for the 54 African Mamas in Uganda, Suzan Wetsetse has taken the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of vulnerable young girls. She initiated a project called the ‘Shendi Project,‘ which aims to empower and uplift the girl child. “This project serves as a platform for girls to share their stories and advocate for themselves and others.” reveals Wetsetse, “We strive to create sustainable solutions to the challenges faced by these young girls.
We offer them opportunities for growth and development. This project especially extends to my humble home area of Bududa.” Through the ‘Shendi Project,‘ she plans to organize her first outreach program in Bududa, sharing knowledge and resources with the community. By connecting with her roots and making a tangible impact in her home area, Suzan hopes to inspire and uplift the lives of young girls in Bududa.
How Her Passion for Gospel Music Began
“My passion for gospel music stems from my upbringing and strong Christian faith.” says Wetsetse, “From a young age, I recorded songs with my father and sang in church. I believe in the power of gospel music to spread messages of hope, faith, and love. I see music as a powerful tool for preaching the gospel and inspiring positive change in the lives of others.”
While music remains her primary medium for spreading the gospel, Suzan Wetsetse also believes in the significance of giving back. Through acts of generosity, she aims to exemplify the gospel’s teachings and inspire others to do the same. Suzan understands that preaching the gospel extends beyond words and embraces actions that demonstrate compassion and kindness.
Music or Marriage and the Toughest moment in her life
Suzan Wetsetse faced a significant dilemma when she had to choose between marriage and pursuing her music career. “Because of my commitment to my passion, I chose to pursue my dreams in music. This was such a tough choice because it was stacked against my marriage.” This inspires others to follow their own paths despite obstacles. However, that’s not the most horrible thing that happened to the beautiful singer. At 12 Suzan Wetsetse received the news that her mother had passed away. “This loss deeply affected me! It left a void in my life. However, I continue to carry my mother’s memory with me. I also draw strength from her experiences.” said the sad musician.
