When you speak of Rugby 7s, it’s not a surprise that a few individuals would understand this beautiful game. A diamond shape ball is used when playing the Rugby 7s. Just as the name suggests, there are seven players per team.Other versions of rugby use 13 or 15 players.Rugby 7s was first played in Melrose, Scotland. This was way back in 1883.
On Saturday June 22, Tororo District held it’s inaugural Rugby 7s competitions. Out of the over 60 schools in the district, eight showed interest and only three backed up this interest by paying the participation fee. The schools assembled at Elgon View Rugby Grounds where the first ever edition of the Rugby 7s was played .

How the Rugby 7s Matches went on
The first game saw Great Aubrey Memorial College ( GAMCO) play against Mercy High School. Mercy High School made one try ( you can call it a goal) and GAMCO didn’t make any. One try is equal to five points.

Next, Rubongi Army Secondary School ( RASS ) faced off with Mercy High School. The Game ended RASS – 10 points ( 2 tries) and Mercy High School – 5( 1 try).

Lastly, RASS once again came on to play against GAMCO . GAMCO came out victorious with a 10-0 win. This meant all the three team had a win and a loss. To determine the winner, the goal difference was brought in place. GAMCO had -5, Mercy High School -10 and RASS -15. Thus GAMCO were declared winners.

Rugby 7s Girls Competitions
It’s disappointing despite the many programs out in place to make sure girls are not left behind, up to now certain institutions are still lagging behind. At the very first inaugural Rugby 7s Tororo District competitions, only two teams managed to report for the show down.

The two teams were RASS and St Benedict . The game began off with a tense mood with RASS girls determined to make up for where their boys had run short. As a result, the game ended with RASS making 3 tries ( 15 points ) and St Benedict not making any .
It was such a joyous moment for RASS winning another trophy after Winning the Tororo District Netball competitions on Thursday 20 June 2024. What a week for them.

Speaking after the competitions, the Chairperson Rugby Tororo District, Mr. Byaruhanga Timothy urged schools to welcome and invest in this game. He added that there are a number of opportunities that come along with participation in this prestigious game and prayed for more schools to participate come the second edition in 2025.
