Tororo Rugby has launched a new tree planting campaign as part of its Olympic values. The initiative involves planting trees after rugby clinics in Eastern Uganda and Western Kenya.
Given the large number of students and pupils participating in rugby, the Tororo Rugby management felt that tree planting could be a valuable corporate social responsibility activity. The tree planting campaign is being carried out under the Luo Rugby Caravan fan base, which includes teams like Tororo Crests RFC, Bungoma RFC, Webuye RFC, and Busia Border Rucks RFC.
Tracking Trees with Google Maps
All trees planted under the Luo Rugby Caravan initiative will be tracked on Google Maps with specific coordinates attached to each tree or planting area. This will allow for monitoring and evaluation of the greening efforts.
The tree planting initiative was supported by the Malaba Town Catholic priest Father Kamisa and the LC 1 of Malaba Seed SS. The director of studies and games teacher at Malaba Seed SS were also involved.
About Malaba Seed SS and the Tree Planting Campaign
Malaba Seed SS is a community school founded by the Ugandan government in 2016. It has a population of 900 students and 40 staff members. Despite facing challenges such as water, power, and access to roads, the school has embraced rugby as a co-curricular activity. Mr. Olakashem Gilbert serves as the school’s rugby patron and games teacher.
Tororo Rugby’s green initiative is a commendable effort to contribute to environmental sustainability while promoting rugby in Eastern Uganda and Western Kenya. By planting trees and tracking their progress, the organization is making a tangible impact on the region’s green spaces.
