After last hosting the event in 2022, the excitement is building once again. “It’s going to be the second edition of Tororo hosting this event,” said Timothy Byaruhanga, highlighting the anticipation in the air.The Venue will be Elgon View Sports Club starting from 8:00AM.
The festival will feature top teams like Tororo Crests, Busitema Boons, Soroti Rangers, Mbale Elephants, Njeru Hurricanes, and Crocs among the men. The women’s competition will see fierce rivalry from the She Wolves and international flair with Webuye RFC and Bungoma RFC from Kenya.

The Genesis of the Tororo Sevens Rugby Festival
Every groundbreaking initiative has its pioneer, and for the Tororo Sevens Rugby Festival, that visionary is Timothy Byaruhanga. When discussing the origins of this vibrant competition, Byaruhanga’s name is synonymous with its inception. Currently serving as the Tororo District Rugby Chairperson and a former player for esteemed teams such as Nile RFC and Jinja Hippos, Byaruhanga’s passion and dedication have been instrumental in bringing this festival to life.
Byaruhanga’s unwavering love for rugby has not gone unnoticed. His relentless efforts to promote the sport in Eastern Uganda earned him the prestigious Individual Presidential Award from Uganda Rugby President Godwin Kayangwe in the 2022 awards. This accolade stands as a testament to Byaruhanga’s tireless work and profound impact on the rugby community, celebrating his commitment to spreading the rugby gospel and inspiring countless individuals in the region.
Brief History of Rugby Competitions in Tororo
Tororo Rugby Club hosted the penultimate round of the Nile Special Rugby 7s Series 2023 at the Elgon View Grounds from August 19-20, 2023. The event, themed ‘Back To Our Roots,’ was supported by the Mileke family, known for their rugby legacy, with members like Erasmus, Gabriel, and Joseph Aredo hailing from Tororo.
The main focus was rugby, with sixteen men’s and six women’s teams competing in the sixth circuit of the series. Notable teams included the Heathens, winners of the Kyadondo 7s Men’s Cup, in Pool A along with Buffaloes, Rams, and the home-based Tororo Crest. Series leaders Pirates were in Pool B with Impis, Njeru Hurricanes, and Elgon Wolves, champions of the Eastern region.
