When will UEDCL take over?
The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has announced that it will officially take over the distribution and sale of power in Uganda from April 1, 2025. This follows the termination of Umeme’s operations on March 31, 2025, marking a significant shift in the country’s power distribution sector.

Seamless Transition Assured
UEDCL has assured all power consumers that the transition will not disrupt service. Electricity units purchased before April 1, 2025, and unused on customers’ meters will remain valid. Furthermore, customers will continue to purchase and load electricity using the usual platforms, including MTN, Airtel, banks, and other authorized collection services.
Public Caution Against Fraudsters
As the transition approaches, UEDCL has warned the public about fraudulent individuals who may attempt to exploit the situation by impersonating UEDCL officials. There have been reports of unauthorized persons claiming that electricity meters will be removed or that power units will become invalid after the transition. UEDCL has refuted these claims and emphasized that all communication regarding the transition will come from official channels.
Reporting Suspicious Activity
Customers are encouraged to report any suspicious individuals or activities involving power installations to the nearest service center, police station, or relevant local authorities. UEDCL remains committed to ensuring that the transition is smooth and secure for all consumers.
