Uganda is gearing up for its national census, scheduled for May 9th, 2024. This ten-day exercise, which happens every ten years, will be the first to utilize digital technology for data collection, processing, and dissemination. This shift to digital promises more accurate and timely demographic, social, and economic data for the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS).
The Importance of Uganda Census 2024
The data collected during the census plays a vital role in shaping Uganda’s future. It informs government planning, policy formulation, and program implementation. This ensures that resources are allocated effectively to meet the needs of the population and monitor progress towards national development goals.
For instance, the census results will reveal changes in Uganda’s religious demographics since the last census in 2014. In 2014, Catholics made up 40% of the population, followed by Anglicans at 32% and Muslims at 14%. Understanding these demographic shifts will help the government plan for the future needs of the citizenry.
Selection of Census Enumerators and Supervisors
The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) announced the shortlist of applicants for census enumerator and enumeration supervisor positions on April 2nd, 2024. Those shortlisted received notification via email and will be contacted for the next steps in the recruitment process.
Prior to the announcement, UBOS had extended the application deadline for these crucial roles to March 22nd, 2024. The successful candidates will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of the census. Enumerators will be responsible for collecting data from households within their assigned areas, while supervisors will oversee the work of enumerators and ensure data quality.
With only 35 days remaining until the census, Uganda is in the final stages of preparation. The recruitment of enumerators and supervisors is a significant step forward, bringing the country closer to a successful digital census.
