When did Muhoozi Kainerugaba quit X?
On 10th January 2025, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, surprised many when he announced his departure from X (formerly Twitter) on Friday. The announcement, made to his over one million followers, left many Ugandans speculating about the circumstances behind his exit. Among those questioning the situation is Pastor Martin Ssempa, a city pastor known for his outspoken views.
What message did Muhoozi Kainerugaba leave behind before deactivating his account?
In his farewell post, Gen Muhoozi cited divine instruction as the reason for his decision. “To all my Dear followers, it has been a great whirlwind and rousing journey together on these streets for the last 10 years since 2014. However, the time has now come under the instructions and blessings of my Lord Jesus Christ to leave and concentrate on His army, the UPDF,” he wrote.
However, Pastor Ssempa raised concerns about whether the decision was entirely voluntary or if external factors played a role. Specifically, he questioned whether Gen Muhoozi’s exit could be linked to his recent controversial posts targeting Robert Kyagulanyi, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and a key political rival.
“There are also rumors circulating that your account was banned due to alleged threats against Mr. Bobi Wine. Is there any truth to these claims, or are they merely unfounded speculations?” Ssempa asked publicly.
This speculation stems from a series of posts by Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba last week, in which he appeared to threaten Kyagulanyi, whom he referred to as a rebel. One post, in particular, caused an uproar: “Kabobi, I am going to BEAT the CRAP OUT of you… Just utter my name or my family’s name again, and I will break all those monkey teeth of yours.”
The inflammatory remarks sparked widespread criticism, with many questioning their implications. When Gen Muhoozi announced his departure shortly afterward, some Ugandans on social media speculated that his account might have been banned due to violating the platform’s policies on threats and harassment.
What is Pastor Sempa saying about the exit of Muhoozi Kainerugaba from X?
Pastor Ssempa, while acknowledging Muhoozi’s contributions to Ugandan social media discourse, emphasized the need for clarity to dispel any lingering rumors. “But now that you are gone, who is going to give us the fearless truth to this question?” he asked.
Ssempa also reflected on Muhoozi’s influence on X, particularly his famous ‘Friday night banter,’ which he noted had become a hallmark of Ugandan online conversations. “Whether we agreed or not, those conversations gave us something to talk about—and laugh about. As you step away from X, I wish you success in your ongoing efforts to promote peace and stability in the region,” he added.
In his farewell post, Gen Muhoozi reassured his followers of a potential return, stating that after fulfilling his divine assignment to restore peace and security in the region, he might consider rejoining the platform. “At an appropriate time, when it becomes important and after fulfilling the Almighty God’s immediate assignment to restore everlasting peace and security to all His people in our region, we shall always re-converge,” he wrote.
For now, the departure of one of Uganda’s most followed and controversial figures on social media remains a topic of heated debate, with questions about whether his exit was purely personal or prompted by external pressures still unanswered.
