How did Mikal Tesfay gain a Passion for Fashion?
Mikal’s journey into the world of fashion began in her childhood. Growing up in a supportive family that applauded her impromptu fashion shows and modeling stints, she nurtured her passion for fashion from a young age. “It started when I was making clothes for my dolls as a kid. So basically, it is in my genes,” she recalls. Officially, Mikal began her modeling career two years ago. “There’s still so much out there waiting for me, and I can’t wait to embrace it all,” she says with enthusiasm.
Crowned Miss Eritrea
Mikal’s path to becoming Miss Eritrea was marked by her enthusiasm and determination. “When it was announced for the first time, I was too excited to see myself on the journey of Miss Eritrea,” she says. She applied, competed fiercely, and ultimately emerged victorious, being crowned Miss Eritrea in Uganda for 2024/2025. The competition, held on May 5, 2024, was intense, with many talented models vying for the title. “The competition was fierce; the other models were not easy to beat,” she admits, reflecting on the journey.
A Background Rooted in Eritrea
Born and raised in Eritrea, Mikal’s upbringing was filled with encouragement and support. Her father, Tesfay Mehari, and her mother, Selemawit Habtom, played significant roles in her development. She attended Finish Mission School for her elementary and junior grades and continued her education at Semaetat Secondary School until 11th grade. Mikal then completed her military training and final year of high school at Sawa Military Camp, where she excelled in her matriculation exams.
Following her high school education, Mikal pursued higher education at Adi-Keith College of Business and Social Science, earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication with a minor in political science and international relations. She joined Eritrea’s Ministry of Information as a journalist, where she contributed significantly by writing articles and interviewing prominent figures, including Hollywood actress Tiffany Haddish.
Why did Mikal Tesfay come to Uganda?
Mikal’s journey took a dramatic turn when she came to Uganda as a refugee. Despite the challenges she faced, her resilience and determination shone through. “If there is a will, there is always a way,” she affirms. In Uganda, she found numerous opportunities and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at the International University of East Africa (IUEA), alongside her modeling career.
What does it feel like after winning Miss Eritrea Uganda for Mikal Tesfay?
Being crowned Miss Eritrea holds profound meaning for Mikal. “This award means a lot to me because it’s an award that I have representing my country. In other words, responsibility and duties come with it,” she explains. For Mikal, this title is not just a personal achievement but a representation of her dedication to her country and the responsibilities that accompany it.
