A Journey Through Time, the Elgon Festival 2024, slated for September 6th to 8th, 2024, is a vibrant cultural and music showcase that takes place in Mbale City, Uganda. Organized by Babana Basha , and Masaba Tourism Initiative, the festival celebrates the rich heritage of the nine ethnic groups residing in and around Mount Elgon from both Kenya and Uganda which include, Sapiiny (Kalenjin), Bamasaba. (Babukusu), Bagwere, Samia (luhya nation), Banyole, Japadhola(luo) , Karimojong and Iteso (Ateker) and Basoga. Its aim is to preserve, educate and entertain.
The First Edition of Elgon Festival (2022)
The origins of the Elgon Festival started as a fusion of ideas from Babana Basha, a renowned entertainment and talent management company , in partnership with Masaba Tourism Initiatives,, a champion of curating cultural festivals. Despite initial controversy, the concept was well received by cultural enthusiasts and preservationists. The nine ethnicities came together to share stories, dance, and showcase their traditional crafts.
Growth and Recognition
As word spread about the Elgon Festival, its popularity grew. The festival became a platform for various ethnic groups to bring awareness to their own festivals. Notably, the Karimojong Festival, Bagisu (Imbalu) Festival, and Akogo Festival found representation, allowing each group to express their unique cultural identities.
